Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, was a British colony that gained independence in 1948.  Since independence, the country has witnessed long-running clashes between its many ethnic groups and one of the longest-running civil wars.

Myanmar was ruled by a military regime from 1962 to 2011, but after the 2012 elections, it officially ended in 2011 and was replaced by a paramilitary government that has embarked on a series of democratic reforms.  In the 2015 elections, Aung San Suu Kyi"s party won a majority in both houses.  However, the Burmese army remained a powerful force in politics and regained power on February 1, 2021 in a coup.

Myanmar is a country with many resources, but its economy is one of the least developed in the world.  Southern Myanmar was devastated by a severe storm in 2008.  Half of Myanmar"s population has been affected by Hurricane Narges this year, with at least 78,000 people killed and 56,000 missing.
